A Chin Wag with Jim Wag
Jim Wagstaff is our most senior member of Planet Lodge and he is also one of our founding members. At 94 years of age Jim still enjoys his Freemasonry and attends as many meetings as possible. He takes part in our meetings and delivers his workings to a very high standard, setting the bar high and demonstrating, dedication and a daily advancement in masonic learning, is what it takes to carry out good ritual.
Jim Joined freemasonry in he’s late 20s, joining a lodge called Observatory where his farther was a member and where Jim was in fact one of the early initiates into the lodge after the lodge had been formed. Jim had many friends and work colleagues that were also members of Observatory, and in those days Freemasonry was very popular with Observatory having membership numbers of up to 80 Brethren.
Lodge meetings and LOI (lodge of instruction) were held in The old Masonic hall in church street and on occasions, Jim and other brethren would afterwards pop into the Coach makers Arms for a well deserved drink. It was here where the idea of a new lodge was thought up and so with the backing of Observatory Lodge, and 19 founder members, Planet was formed. In order to have a working lodge for the meeting to take place, there needed to be brethren to take office, these were made up from Observatory lodge and other existing lodges such as Sunrise lodge and on Friday 14th April 1967 Planet lodge was consecrated and the lodge was up and running.
Garrard Green was the 1st installed master of planet lodge, a very highly respected actor and an extremely good ritualist.
Planet lodge has been fortunate enough to have Brethren following in Garrards footsteps, maintaining the high standard set and continuing the good work to this day.
Charity Work
As Freemasons, we commit to helping others less fortunate than ourselves. We do this in many ways, we hold social events, carry out personal challenges and hold functions within our lodges in order to raise money.
We are a non profit making organisation so all money raised is donated directly to the charities.
